Wish you all.. a great midsummer weekend...
The secret of Swedish health could be on the way to being discovered. A new experiment shows eating pickled herrings for lunch five days a week can increase levels of good cholesterol. Five Volvo workers in Gothenburg were asked to eat herring for lunch five days a week. Tests show that the amount of high density lipoproteins (HDL), or good cholesterol, rose as a result. A lot of the fish that is caught today goes towards making fishmeal. That is a huge waste when many other species are overfished.
The first into the health effects of herring, because fatty fish contain omega 3 fatty acids. The researchers have measured blood pressure, cholesterol, triglyceride levels and inflammation markers on blood vessel walls of the people in the trial before and after the six week period. The same people were then asked to eat various meat dishes for lunch for a further six week period, in order that the results could be compared. This is not an enormous study, so it should be taken with a pinch of salt, but the levels of good cholesterol rose when people ate herring.
Other researchers have previously studied the effects of fish-liver oil capsules, which are seen to protect against cardiovascular disease. The interesting thing with this experiment was to see what happened when the people in the trial ate the whole fish. There were a significant rise in omega 3 levels. No negative effects of the herring diet were noted. The fishing industry had not given financial backing to the study. The costs were covered with EU money through the Swedish Board of Fisheries and by the Västra Götaland region. All the participants in the study were slightly overweight men between 35 and 60. The herring was prepared by top chef. The experiment appeared to have startling effects on the participants. After the trial period the test people have drastically reduced the meat consumption.
Pickled herrings with new potatoes is one of the traditions on the Swedish food table for midsummer.. so I guess those who enjoys it.. can go ahead an munch away to their hearts content. Wish you all a great midsummer weekend...

Yup, it was my birthday last week. Did I celebrate it with cake and presents..? Well, I haven't actually celebrated my birthday for a few years now. Not that gifts ain't great to receive or so, but what's there to celebrate and be happy about..? More wrinkles all over the used to have baby-skin, a few (all right perhaps more than a just a few) kilos added around the waist and not to mention elsewhere on the body.. making last years bought clothes impossible to wear anymore, tons of problems to ponder about which create grey hair in advance.. that makes me look more than a year old than last year... but above all, one more year closer to the precipice, putting my clogs around the corner, peeling my last potatoe, whistling my last tune, falling of the branch and landing with my head first on the ground, waving hello to St. Peter and then being turned down to enter the Pearly-gate, farting my last fart and so forth... Sorry there's nothing to be happy about turning older and older.. and then perhaps really old before it's time to departure to an unknown destination.
Just ignore what I wrote above.. it's only me being ridiculous. Does anyone want to know how I really spent the day..? Probably not, but here we go anyway... I went up pretty early.. made a picnic basket and due to that I had decided to wear a skirt.. I realized I had to shave my hairy legs and for the first time in my whole life I cut myself. Not once but three times.. it bled and I tried to ignore it, but realizing that it was a bit hard to do.. since I left a blod trail after me walking around the house. Dear mother forced a band-aid on the worst cut. Anyway, when that was done I had a quick breakfast and then off we went on a one day excursion. There were lots to do and see, but we didn't make it all.. so we will have another excursion later this summer. There's no idea to tell of the places we visited.. one of them was Gudhem's ruined abbey. It's probably only a handful who have ever heard of that place.. very beautiful surroundings. Back at home late in the evening, I was sleepy and went to bed sometime after 11pm.
The next day I had a late morning.. I didn't have anything until 2pm, when I was going to meet Ida. When I saw her in town, we took a stroll around the lake.. had an ice-cream and in the evening at 6pm we saw the movie The Da Vinci Code. I must say I got a little disappointed with the film and I don't think Tom Hanks was the right actor for the role as Robert Langdon. I usually like Tom Hanks movies, but he didn't fit for that part.. it was just not him in a strange way. But Ida she liked the film very much and everything about it. I thought the French actress, Audrey Tautou, was great. Silly ending in the film and I have heard it's not the same as in the book, well.. I'll find out. I've started to read the book now. I've also got the book Angels and Demons as an audio book to listen through. Well, next film I would like to see is Pirates of the Caribbean: sequel II Dead man's chest. I like Johnny Depp, he is one of my favourite actors. I will probably watch the movie with Ida and she is an Orlando Bloom fan.. I don't have much to say about him, more than that I don't get how he got that famous.. probably due to his part as Legolas Greenleaf from the Lords of the rings. Peter Jackson made three good movies and Orlando did good in them, but not that great as far as I think.. He's movie Elizabethtown wasn't much to praise over...
Well, today I'm doing some household cleaning.. dear mother has invited guests over and they are arriving at 11am. Also, it's raining outside.. pouring down and it's the first day of rain for a long time. I think it's nice.. the air gets so fresh and the nature gets a real good bath so to say...

Climate change will increase.. the risk of flooding...
Climate change will increase the risk of flooding in western Sweden, but householders in many other parts of Sweden will have less to worry about, according to new research. Scientists at Swedish meteorological office SMHI warn that the western counties face an increased risk of flooding. Professor Bergström, who examined the issue for an insurance company, said that higher average temperatures would have complex effects on Sweden's climate.
The rise in temperatures is expected to bring more rain and less snow. This would mean that spring floods caused by melting snow would be less common, while autumn rain could cause increased flooding over the coming decades. The risk of flooding will not increase everywhere. In the area near Stockholm around Lake Mälaren the situation will not become worse, and around Daläven (in central Sweden) it could even improve, as it is largely due to snow melting. The prospects for the area around Lake Vänern are most worrying, which already has problems with flooding. Bergström warns that these will become worse with climate change.
According to Olsson, climate expert, it is in the industry's interests to share its knowledge about the areas facing growing problems. He emphasized that local councils have a responsibility to take account of flooding risks when considering where to locate new developments. The desire for waterside properties means that people are building nearer and nearer to the water and that increases the risks.

Will finally watch.. The Da Vinci Code...
Knock on wood, but it looks as though summer is finally here to stay. As we all shed our heavy clothes for something a bit lighter, Sweden's Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) is warning that the ozone layer is particularly thin over Sweden right now. Earlier this year, the ozone layer has been thick over Sweden, but since June is here, that invisible layer which usually protects us is a bit thinner, leaving SMHI to say once again, 'Be careful in the sun.' During the spring, the ozone layer of Sweden was as thick as it has been since 1988. But the layer has been especially thin the past few days. SMHI said the higher the sun the higher the UV-index rises. While the index is often around 5 during midday, in southern Sweden the index can rise to seven. The SMHI Web site recommends no more than 40 minutes of sun with a UV-index around five.
Later today I'm going into town and I'll meet Ida.. if it's not to hot we may take a stroll around the lake. I hope she booked the tickets to The Da Vinci Code yesterday, so we can watch the movie this evening. I've been looking forward to see the film.. even though it hasn't got that very good review. I actually bought the book a couple of weeks ago, but haven't started to read it yet.. because I wanted to watch it first. I've been told many things from the book are left out from the movie and the end is totally different from the book as well. This way I won't get to disappoint with the movie not being like the original. Ida has listened to the audio book.. both that one and I believe the other one Angels and Demons.

Pirate Bay's popularity doubled.. since the police raid...
The Pirate Bay, one of the world's most popular websites for illegal downloading of movies, has doubled its number of visitors after Swedish police shut down the site for three days, according to an Internet monitoring site. Swedish authorities closed the site after several raids on May 31. The site reopened three days later using servers in The Netherlands. Figures released by Alexa.com, a US-based Internet monitoring company, showed that traffic to the Pirate Bay had doubled since the site reopened. According to the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), the site makes more than 157,000 illegal files available including recent releases such as 'The Da Vinci Code', 'Mission Impossible: III' and 'Poseidon'...

Alzheimer's 'usually caused by genes'...
A new study of nearly 12 000 twins shows that Alzheimer's has a genetic cause in up to 80 percent of cases. The study, which used the unique twin registry at Stockholm's Karolinska Institute, raises doubts about the role of environmental factors in contributing to the disease, said Gatz, professor of psychology at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and lead author of the report. According to the study's data, which was based on the largest sample ever under taken in research of the disease, genetic influence accounted for 79 percent of Alzheimer's risk, the report said. The other 21 percent of risk was due to environmental causes, the study said. The sample for the study was based on 11 884 twins in Sweden over the age of 65. The Swedish Twin Registry is the largest and most complete register of its kind in the world, and is currently being used to study diseases including osteoporosis, schizophrenia, cardiovascular disease, Parkinson’s, autism and chronic fatigue syndrome.
Gatz led an international team of researchers from Swedish and US universities in a project funded by grants from the National Institute of Aging and the Alzheimer's Association. She said, that environmental factors could not be dismissed. 'This doesn't mean that environment is not important. Environment may be relevant not only for whether but also for when one gets the disease.' More than 24 million people worldwide suffer from Alzheimer's or similar conditions and the number is set to double every 20 years, said a study published last month in British medical journal The Lancet.

The American film and music industry rejoiced over the raid by the Swedish police on The Pirate Bay. But reports that the US government was behind the action against the Sweden-based file sharing site have now resulted in the Swedish government being reported to the country's Constitutional Committee. According to the news, the action was the result of contact between the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) and the White House. The US State Department then turned to Stockholm, with a demand for Sweden to do something about The Pirate Bay. In April a Swedish delegation consisting of representatives of the National Police Department, the Police Board and the Ministry of Justice travelled to Washington to discuss The Pirate Bay.
Swedish police and prosecutors were then given the go-ahead to act. According to one prosecutor the legal situation was still unclear, but the state secretary Dan Eliasson gave the order for the operation to begin, according to the news. He said, 'I can guarantee that nobody from the Ministry of Justice gets involved in operational work in individual cases. Neither politicians nor civil servants.' The Swedish delegation and the US authorities simply discussed copyright issues and how to deal with file sharing in general terms and did not focus on The Pirate Bay specifically. 'We have not had any demands about The Pirate Bay from the American authorities at a government level. On the other hand, there are often discussions at a civil servant level about the problem of file sharing and copyright breaches', he said. Eliasson also confirmed that the MPAA has lobbied the Swedish government many times. The Centre Party's justice spokesman Linander has asked the parliamentary Constitutional Committee to investigate justice minister Bodström and others in office. Linander says that American pressure led Swedish politicians to get involved in the police's operations. Last Thursday Bodström said that he found it hard to believe that anyone would try to direct the Swedish police or prosecutors to make arrests.
During Wednesday's raid on The Pirate Bay police confiscated around two hundred servers. Then on Thursday night, apparently in response, an attack from hackers overloaded the Swedish police's web site leaving offline for almost a day. On Sunday morning the police site had crashed again. The government's web site was functioning again at around 8am on Sunday morning, but it was still unclear whether it was completely back to normal. A group calling themselves 'World Wide Hackers' claimed responsibility for the attacks in a telephone call to the newspaper on Saturday night. Experts say that the attack on the government's site followed the same pattern as that on the police. But officials are still not saying what forced the most important web site for the Swedish authorities out of action.
Throughout the day the government's IT department is to work on preventing further attacks from crashing the site. The file sharing battle even reached the streets of Stockholm on Saturday, as hundreds of demonstrators with pirate flags gathered in Mynttorget, in the city's Gamla Stan. The protestors demanded that The Pirate Bay's servers be given back and the investigation against the site's operators closed. At the demonstration, which was organised by Piratbyrån, The Pirate Party and the youth wings of the Greens the Left Party and the Liberals, many spoke out against the Swedish authorities' recent raids. The leader of the Liberals' youth association, Fredrik Malm, pointed out that despite the massive police raid on The Pirate Bay, the site was already operating again. The cost of the action had been wasted, he said. File sharing site The Pirate Bay, which was closed down following Wednesday's raid by the Swedish police, opened again on Saturday morning under a different name: The Police Bay. The site's performance was still patchy at lunchtime on Saturday, despite being run from new servers in Holland after all the Swedish equipment was confiscated.

The Pirate Bay.. file sharing site closed down...
Police have closed down The Pirate Bay, a Sweden-based file sharing site and one of the most popular websites of its kind in the world. Three people were taken in for questioning after police raids in Sweden on Wednesday. The trio, ages 22, 24 and 28, are suspected of violating property rights legislation. Servers connected to the site have been impounded and the site was down on Wednesday afternoon, although the operators of The Pirate Bay have set up a temporary website to provide updates on the situation.
Some fifty policemen and women were involved in raids on ten homes and offices in Sweden. The three men taken in by police were still being questioned on Wednesday afternoon. They all have links to The Pirate Bay. Prosecutors will decide whether to detain the men after they have been questioned. Police have been monitoring the website and the men behind it for some time. Computers were taken during raids on the men's homes and offices to secure evidence.
Henrik Pontén, lawyer at Antipiratbyrån (The Anti-Pirate Bureau) in Stockholm, welcomed the move to close down the site. 'People who break copyright laws steal from the creators and movie-watching public of the future. The closure of The Pirate Bay is therefore good for all of us who enjoy new film and entertainment.' But Tobias Andersson at pressure group Piratbyrån (The Pirate Bureau), which founded The Pirate Bay, stressed that there was no copyright-protected material on the servers. Andersson also condemned the fact that police had closed down a number of other websites, including The Pirate Bureau, which he says is no longer officially linked to the Pirate Bay. When police raided the company hosting file sharing site The Pirate Bay, they also closed down a number of sites that have nothing to do with music or film sharing, it has emerged. The Pirate Bay's servers were kept at the PRQ hosting company in Stockholm. But when police raided the company on Wednesday, they allegedly took all servers on the premises without checking who they belonged to.
According to a message on PRQ's own homepage, 'all servers and network eqipment was seized in an act of blatant abuse of power by public prosecutor Håkan Roswall.' The company also said it planned to sue the Swedish state to get the equipment returned and 'for the multi-million dollar losses sustained by us and our customers.' One of the customers to be hit was Birdie, a gaming association which had some of its games hosted at PRQ. IT news website IDG named 9 sites that had been taken offline in addition to The Pirate Bay. Police spokesman refused to say whether the other servers had been taken on purpose, and if so, why. The prosecutor also said he could not answer questions about the precise circumstances of the raid.
The Pirate Bay is suspected of breach of copyright law, alternatively assisting breach of copyright law. The Motion Picture Association of America said that the raid 'served as a reminder to pirates all over the world that there are no safe harbours for Internet copyright thieves.' The Pirate Bay is a BitTorrent tracker, which enables people to download large files such as movies from other users.

An entry in the evening...
It's pretty unusually for me to make entries in the evening nowadays, but I didn't have time this morning. Also, I've been very tired the past weeks.. due to my allergy and asthma and last Friday I got sick and dizzy.. vomited and went to bed. My sister who is a nurse thinks it could be a combination of low blood pressure and lack of minerals.. or something like that. My sister and nephew were here visiting last week and that was great. He is so sweet and he is turning five this summer.. can't really believe that. He is growing so fast. We celebrated Mother's Day on Sundady and later in the afternoon they took the train back home to Gothenburg. Otherwise, is not much happening or have happened lately. I went to the dentist on Tuesday afternoon to pull out a tooth and that was not fun at all.. it's necessary though. I had to pay about 1300Skr for that and I still have one tooth left to do. Not looking forward to that, but I want to have it done as soon as possible.. so I can forget and put it behind me. I really dislike going to the dentist... Well, tomorrow I'm going to see Ida. I borrowed ASH's Music for elevators of her, which I'm returning and I'm very curious to hear how the gathering in Linköping went. She promised to take lots of pictures, so she could show me.

I haven't been watching Late Night for a long time, but yesterday I just had to see the rerun of the episode when Seth Green was guest on the show. I wanted to see/hear what he was promoting this time. Seth and one of his friends had made a comic book called Freshman.. and it was apparently out in stores to buy now. Much more about that project wasn't mentioned. The other projected was Robot Chicks.. that was aired on Sundays and we was treated with a short clip where Bush was fighting with a light sabel.. killing of, I think it was, Abraham Lincoln. Seth did many of the voices and on the LN show he imitated Owen Wilson and Matthew McConoughan. They didn't mention anything about the TV series Four Kings, which Seth has one of the roles.. so I don't know if the that show is cancelled or is just having a break between the seasons at the moment. Anyway, Mr Green was really nice dressed.. with a black jacket with Rolling Stones logo on the inside and Seth made a funny remark on that. Otherwise, as I said, I haven't been watching Late Night for weeks now and I saw.. when it was too late... I had missed the episode when the comedian Jim Gaffigan was guest. He had made a third part of Pale Force and this time he had added Seymor Hoffman, but of course Jim is still doing all the voices. To see all episodes so far.. visit his website @ jimgaffigan.com |

And last but not to forget to mention today.. a big congratulation to the birthday boy Wentworth Miller who is turning 34 today.. This hunk is looking pretty fine and doing good with the TV series Prisonbreak, which at the moment is on a break between the seasons... |

All other love is like the moon,
Which grows and shrinks like flower on plain;
Like bud that blooms and withers soon;
Like passing day that ends in rain.
All other love begins in bliss,
And ends in tears and suffering:
No love can salve us all but this,
The love that rests in heaven's King.
For ever green, renewed again,
For ever full, it never pales.
It ever sweetens, free from pain,
Continues always, never fails.
