Sweden should improve.. protection of women...

A new United Nations report has criticized Sweden for shortcomings in its strategy for tackling violence against women. At the municipal level in particular there is much room for improvement, according to special rapporteur Yakin Ertürk. While Sweden receives praise for the advancement of equal opportunities in the public sphere, the country is deemed to have fallen short 'in addressing the deeply rooted unequal power relations between women and men which underlie the continuation of diverse forms of violence against women'.

Yakin Ertürk reached her conclusions after a close examination of various different manifestations of violence, which included intimate-partner violence, rape and sexual coercion, and violence against women of immigrant, asylum-seeker or refugee background. The standard of protection policies at the municipal level was found to have particular deficiencies. Some of the non-governmental shelters employ paid staff. Most rely on dedicated volunteers. Many shelters have to operate under severe budget constraints, because a large number of municipalities fail to fund the non-governmental institutions they use in order to fulfil their own legal responsibilities.

The report further cites an Amnesty International report, which found that 'more than a third of Sweden’s municipalities give no or only symbolic funding to women’s shelters'. An increase in violence of a sexual nature was also noted in the report. The perpetrators and victims can be found in all segments and at all levels of society, although some women, including immigrant, refugee and minority women as well as women in prostitution, face particular vulnerabilities. Sweden is reported to have an excellent legal framework for dealing with violence against women 'but low prosecution and conviction rates give a clear indication that its implementation must be further improved'. In conclusion, the report outlines a number of recommendations, including a call for the government to 'enhance the institutional capacity of municipalities in better fulfilling their obligation to protect women'.

Sweden joining the Nato force...

Sweden could break with tradition and contribute to Nato's new rapid-reaction force, which was given the go-ahead at the Riga summit. The nature of Sweden's possible involvement in the Nato Response Force (NRF) is still unclear. However, the foundation for the increasingly close cooperation is Sweden's undertaking to lead the EU's Nordic battlegroup. The Nato military alliance will invite Sweden to participate in the force. Defence minister said that there is reason 'to try this in positive spirit'. However, the leader of the Left Party, criticised Sweden's growing relationship with Nato.

He said that it is becoming increasingly difficult to remain outside and that this was the point of the offer. Sweden should not join, and should seek other alternatives. The established Nato countries said at the Riga summit that the NRF, the brainchild of former US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld is ready for action. 25 000 troops will be committed to the force, which has taken four years to organise.

Job interview.. waiting to get employed...

We went out last weekend to our summer house.. and this is how it looked on the way up to the house. You can hardly see the track. Trees had fallen during the last storm we have had and the past days have been really windy too. A lot of mess to clear up.. not fun at all.

Some good news for this week.. I got a call on Monday afternoon from the insurance company I had applied to, like a month ago and they wanted me to come for an interview the next day (Tuesday), which I accepted of course. So, yesterday I went on the interview.. not feeling very nervous, just a little in my tummy.. I was happy I got an interview at all. Since I finished my studies I have been taking it easy.. mostly because I didn't know what to do. I saw the ad the insurance company had and thought.. why not try and here I am waiting for the result. They will get in touch with the candidates that they are interested of in the begining of next week. I will try not to think to much about it and actually.. when I came home yesterday I felt inspired and creative, so I made a pair of earrings. I haven't done any jewellery for a long time now.

Today or tomorrow I will make a pendant for Emma as a gift. I bought a bonzai tree for her mother Evelina and I also made a gift jar out of an old marmalade jar.. and filled it with candy. I'm going to visit them in Falerum during the coming weekend. Leaving on Friday and going back on Monday. Emelie will also arrive on Friday and.. Malin and Ida will be arriving on Saturday. I'm looking forward to meet them all.. It'll be great fun. Even though I will miss out on P-W's birthday party on Saturday in Gothenburg. But I bought a present and a card that he will get. I can't be at two places at the same time.. if I could I would.

Earlier today when I was in the store I couldn't help buying or it was more like me trying to tell my mother that we needed to buy some more flower seeds. Even though we bought some last week. Well, I like gardening and it's difficult not to get some forget-me-not, baby's breath, butterfly orchis, sweet-william, daisy, cornflower and a few others too. Next week when I get back home I will start digging, but I still have to wait a couple of more weeks until I can plant the flower beds. It's itching in my fingers...

Unwanted foreigners.. identify yourselfs...

Police are stepping up the hunt for foreign nationals who do not have the right to be in Sweden. In addition to routine drink driving checks, motorists stopped at police checkpoints will now be asked to produce their passports or identity cards. Identification data will then be cross-checked with the Schengen Information Systems register of known criminals from countries outside the union.

All police should see this as part of their everyday duties, said the police spokesman Mandergren. Eight new countries are set to join the Schengen border union by next year at the latest. This means an end to border controls for travelers from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Poland and the Baltic states. Police fear that more freedom of movement may also entail more movement of criminals. With the higher number of open borders comes an increased risk of people smuggling and illegal immigration. Internal checks on foreign nationals need to be seriously strengthened, said Mandergren, who is leading the work of building up a central border control unit in Sweden. The new Swedish unit will liaise with EU border control agency Frontex.

Skinny seals with bowel ulcers.. in the Baltic sea...

The number of seals in the Baltic colony continues to grow, with the current population estimated at 25 000 animals compared to 4 000 in the 1970s. But today's seals are skinnier than earlier generations and many of them suffer from bowel ulcers, according to the Swedish Museum of Natural History.

The seals' subcutaneous layer of fat has become considerably less thick since the 1980s. The layer of fat for grey seals should measure 30-35 millimetres. But almost half of the animals examined in the area south of the island of Åland had a layer of fat measuring less than 26 millimetres. The subcutaneous layer of fat functions as insulation against the cold and is important as an energy reserve for female seals when they are rearing their young. There have not yet been any negative effects, but the researchers are concerned.

There is no good explanation as to why the seals have shed so much fat. No discernible change has been noted in the quality of the herring they eat, and the change in water temperature has been too marginal to cause any changes of this kind. The frequency of bowel ulcers is also a cause for concern. The ulcers are quite a common cause of death, but we have no satisfactory explanation as to what causes them. While the number of seals in the Baltic has increased dramatically over the last thirty years, levels are still far below those of a century ago, when the seal population was estimated at 100 000. There are hardly any grey seals at all in the southern Baltic. There is plenty of room there for strong growth in the colony.

Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr alias.. Snoop Dogg...

The American rap artist Snoop Dogg was arrested in central Stockholm on Sunday night on suspicion of minor drugs offences. At around 1.30 am the star and a 23 year old woman were taken to a police station in the Södermalm area of the city, where they provided urine samples. Snoop Dogg performed on Sunday evening at the Stockholm venue Globen, along with fellow rapper P Diddy. After the concert he was due to attend a party at the Scandic Anglais hotel in Stockholm's Stureplan, but he never made it to the bash. In what appeared to be a planned raid, the star's car was stopped with several others by police on Centralbron, a bridge in the city.

Earlier in the evening, according to a newspaper, a room at the Grand Hotel, where Snoop Dogg was staying, was searched by police. On Monday morning the 35 year old star, whose real name is Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr, was released. He is said to have behaved appropriately. Now the prosecutor can proceed with this. It's usually a fine. The fine for a minor offence is usually based on the individual's earnings. It is not the first time Snoop Dogg has been in trouble with the Swedish authorities. In summmer 2005 the American rapper caused a stir when he showed a soft porn film before his concert at the Hultsfred festival.

Longer waiting queues to adopt.. for childless Swedes...

Swedes' desire to adopt children has never been higher but at the same time the number of new adoptions is falling. According to preliminary statistics from the Swedish Intercountry Adoptions Authority, 765 children were adopted from abroad by Swedes last year. That compares to 941 children in 2005. There have not been so few for ten years, said the authority's director.

One of the reasons is that the demand for adoptive children has increased in other countries, such as Italy, France and the US. But another factor is that economic and social changes in the countries from which the children are traditionally adopted are leading to fewer being given up for adoption. It is becoming easier for single parents to keep their children and domestic adoptions are increasing. China is to introduce far tougher restrictions on who can adopt Chinese children. The move will affect Sweden significantly.. some 350 Chinese children were adopted by Swedes last year. The new rules will come into force on May 1st 2007 and the reason is that the Chinese authorities want to give children access to 'better families and conditions for being brought up, according to China's standpoint'.

'There's not really much we can do about it.. China decides its rules and if we protest then they'll say 'adopt from another country', according to a spokesman from the Adoption Centre. Adoption organisations in Sweden agree that people in queues to adopt children should expect longer waiting times in future.

The rate of obesity has increased...

One in ten Swedes was clinically obese in 2005, according to new official statistics, compared to only half that number at the beginning of the 1980s. For the first time, over half of Swedish men are overweight or obese. Obesity has increased most among young women, the working class and people living outside the main cities, a new study by Statistics Sweden shows. The number of people classed as overweight has also increased substantially over the past few decades.

Obesity today is a disease of national concern, as it permanently affects a large proportion of the population, according to the report. The authors had little comfort for people hoping to blame their weight on their genes: 'The most important reason for the spread of obesity is changes in lifestyle. It is unclear how great the effect of inherited factors is, but given that the genetic makeup [of the country] cannot have changed in a few decades, the greatest reason for the problem of overweight and obesity must be that people are eating the wrong foods and exercising too little.'

People with a body mass index (BMI) over 30 are classed as obese. The rate of obesity is roughly the same for women as for men, with ten percent of both sexes falling into the category. The rate of obesity has increased most among young women, who have now nearly caught up with men of the same age. In middle age, obesity is still more common among men. Obesity has increased in all socio-economic groups, but the increase has been greatest among the working class, and particularly working class men. People living in rural areas are almost twice as likely to be obese as people in major cities. The obesity rate among women in the major conurbations has not increased substantially over the past ten years, Statistics Sweden says.

The number of people classed as overweight, meaning a BMI of between 25 and 30, has also increased. In 1980, 22 percent of women were overweight, compared to 26 percent in 2005. For men, the figure was 41 percent, up from only 30 percent in 1980. This means that over half of Swedish men are overweight or obese for the first time. The study is based on self-reported figures on weight and height collected regularly since the early eighties. The authors point out that the Body Mass Index has certain limitations, as it does not take into account how much of an individual's body is composed of fat and how much is muscle.

Rise in child diabetes...

An alarming jump in the number of children affected by type 1 diabetes have been recorded. The number of new cases has more than doubled in Stockholm since 1998, and the age at which these children are being diagnosed is also decreasing. It's not uncommon that children are diagnosed at one year old and the children are younger and younger. It's a catastrophe and it demands more of both the parents and the health care services.

The reason behind the jump is still unclear. Hereditary factors along with viral diseases and rapid foetal weight gain are believed to be contributing causes. Type 1 diabetes should not be confused with type 2 which most often affects adults with a poor diet. Type 1 is hereditary and nearly 40 per cent of Swedes carry this gene. Nonetheless, experts were also warning that the large amounts of sugary snacks being fed to children at nursery schools could lead to increases in type 2 diabetes.

A study by the Swedish Dental Association showed that 90 per cent of preschools schools celebrated birthdays with buns, cake or ice cream. Children don't need sugar in their food. Schools should act as role models regarding nutrition and health and should therefore be sugar free zones.

Young children suffering with Type-2, or adult-onset, diabetes have recently been discovered in Sweden for the first time. Early signs of adult-onset diabetes have already been seen in five year olds. That means reduced sensitivity to insulin and evident effects on the blood vessels. It's very serious because Type-2 diabetes is an illness which affects the whole system. This form of diabetes, which is non-insulin-dependent, is becoming increasingly widespread in developed countries. Some 1.2 percent of children at the centre in Huddinge have been shown to have Type-2 diabetes. The first case of adult-onset diabetes in a Swedish teenager was recorded just two years ago.

All other love is like the moon,
Which grows and shrinks like flower on plain;
Like bud that blooms and withers soon;
Like passing day that ends in rain.

All other love begins in bliss,
And ends in tears and suffering:
No love can salve us all but this,
The love that rests in heaven's King.

For ever green, renewed again,
For ever full, it never pales.

It ever sweetens, free from pain,
Continues always, never fails.
